How to Manage Time Effectively as a Dentist

For you to get the best out of your practice, as a dentist you’ve to manage your time effectively first. Many practices fail in this area. Time designated for dental marketing and patient attraction is a must. Although dentists have mastered the art of scheduling their clinical time productively, every other aspect of the practice needs that same level of attention.

Have a planning system in place

Ensure you have a personal planning system in place. This is the first step in effective time management in your practice. Remember, there is a difference between ‘busy’ and ‘productive.” Nowadays we have several planning systems that can help you get the best out of your time online and offline. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. And keeping your dental schedule full requires ‘non clinical time’ also. The system you choose should be convenient and easy to use.

Use the right Supplies and Equipments

A successful practice operates with efficient and reliable supplies and equipments. There is non clinical equipment that can indeed save you time a Fujitsu Scan Snap. This document scanner is my favorite workhorse and takes the complication out of the document. Paper clutter bogs down the work space so digitizing it removes the distractions. It is super fast and you can Google it for reviews at your own discretion.

Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize

Assigning priority to the task at hand is one of the hardest things that dentists go through in their line of duty. As a dentist, you have limited time to address some of these issues because your day is filled with treating patients. Take little time to review some of the tasks you have at hand and determine what level of priority each has. If you read time management books, many will suggest A-B-C type of prioritization but again you need to have clear intention and goals. Record your priorities and plans in your organizer so that you have them with you. Also be realistic about the time you will take to complete each task. Don’t plan too tightly.

Everyone in your practice should know his/her role

Each member of your dental team has a role to play. But this should not limit your dental team to multi-tasking. Therefore it is good to train your dental team for expanded duties. This will help you if you’re overwhelmed with paperwork, you can delegate to some of your dental team member.

Time management in dental practice is a factor that has not to be underestimated if you are looking forward to attracting more patients and keeping your dental schedule full. An effective time management system will depend on every person that will be involved and this call for proper training and team work. Never compromise the quality of services you’ll provide your patients with because they are the ones that will keep patients satisfied and will be your avenue towards dental growth.
